Finally: The Tempest Hits DVD

On December 20, the long-awaited DVD of Julie Taymor’s The Tempest was released.

I was really looking forward to sharing some screencaps of the delightful rehearsal and behind-the-scenes footage on the DVD, but unfortunately, the disc is embedded with some kind of DRM that disables taking any images.

I understand wanting to thwart piracy, but I feel the need to go on a little rant here.  Once again (and ESPECIALLY in a situation like this one), any images or limited footage that MOST people would post online are only going to serve PROMOTE the film.  I’m completely disgusted by how badly Miramax, et al handled the release of this movie.  You dump $25 million dollars into something, wait about 2 years, then release it in about 7 theaters around the world, then totally botch its Blu-Ray/DVD release by spreading it out over months about a year later when all buzz has completely died—and you really want to not allow fans to promote the film for you??

So instead of this being a post about how wonderful the DVD is, it’s about how badly so many production and distribution companies have their heads up their asses.  Good job guys.  No one go out to buy this DVD, borrow it from your library like I did.</end rant>
